Bergamot Oil Uses and Benefits

  1. Like other citrus oils, Bergamot essential oil makes the perfect addition to any glass of water. If you want to give new life to a plain drink of water, consider adding a drop of Bergamot oil along with some cut up pieces of fruit.

  2. While the aromas of many citrus oils are known to be stimulating or invigorating, Bergamot oil has unique calming capabilities that can help when tension or stress levels are high. One of the best ways to glean the calming benefits of Bergamot essential oil is to diffuse the oil. The next time you feel stress levels or tension getting high, consider diffusing Bergamot oil in the classroom, at work, or at home for a calming effect.

  3. The calming benefits of Bergamot essential oil’s aroma are not only present during aromatic diffusion, but also during topical application. These calming properties make Bergamot essential oil a popular choice for massage therapy. Not only does the oil promote a calm, serene atmosphere, but it is also purifying for the skin, which is why many massage professionals use Bergamot oil. If you want to use Bergamot oil for a massage at home, use a carrier oil or dilute with doTERRA Fractionated Coconut Oil for best results.

  4. Want to enjoy the purifying benefits of Bergamot oil for your skin? Make your own Bergamot oil foot mask! Using organic ingredients like raw honey, Greek yogurt, and celery, this mask will help your feet feel soft and luxurious. Applying this smooth mask to your feet allows the rest of your body to absorb the moisturizing, restorative properties that the concoction holds. The purifying power of Bergamot essential oil will soothe and cool dry or distressed feet—rejuvenating your skin from heel to toe.

  5. Do you enjoy adding essential oils to your tea? When you have Bergamot oil on hand, you can enjoy a cup of Earl Grey whenever you want. With a pure, citrus and spice flavor, Bergamot oil is the perfect companion to your daily tea break—quickly changing a regular cup of tea to Earl Grey with a few simple drops. Remember, when adding essential oils to food or drink, less is more. Start out with a small drop and work your way up from there. If the oil is particularly strong, dip a toothpick in the oil and add it to your water, tea, or dish. This keeps the oil flavor from being too overwhelming. Watch this video to learn more about using Bergamot oil for tea.

  6. If you are ready to unwind and refresh your skin after a taxing day, Bergamot oil offers a simple solution for relaxation. At the end of a long day, you can enjoy the calming and skin-purifying benefits of Bergamot oil at the same time by applying it to your skin while showering. While in the shower, apply Bergamot oil to your skin and inhale deeply to experience the calming aroma while enjoying the purifying skin benefits of this versatile oil.

  7. No matter what mood you are in, Bergamot oil can help promote uplifting, relaxing, and confident feelings—particularly when diffused. When diffusing on its own, use three to four drops of Bergamot oil in the diffuser of your choice. Diffusing this oil can help promote a sense of self-confidence when you feel frazzled, or a sense of inner peace when feelings of stress abound. Looking for a good diffuser blend that uses the uplifting aroma of Bergamot? Plant Description

Bergamot essential oil comes from the bergamot fruit, grown primarily in Reggio di Calabria, Italy. Bergamot is unique to Reggio di Calabria because it thrives in the fresh sea-air and acidic soil found in this area. This climate allows growers to harvest high-quality fruit that will produce pure essential oil. Different from other citrus fruits, bergamot is actually a bitter-tasting fruit that yields a sweet essential oil. Similar to Lemon essential oil, Bergamot is produced through cold pressing, where the Bergamot rind is mechanically squeezed—producing pure essential oil.

Chemistry of Bergamot Oil

Main Chemical Components: Limonene, linalyl acetate
As an oil in the citrus family, Bergamot oil includes the chemical component Limonene, which is commonly known for its uplifting aromatic characteristics. The uplifting nature of Bergamot’s chemical makeup is why it is frequently used in massage therapy, as it holds calming benefits. When diffused, the elevating chemical components can help when stress levels are high.

Sourcing

doTERRA sources Bergamot oil from Reggio di Calabria, Italy, where Italian families have run bergamot orchards for decades. Unfortunately, economic downturn has caused many families to abandon their orchards, leaving family tradition behind. Through the doTERRA Co-Impact Sourcing® Initiative in Italy, families can once again receive fair wages and guaranteed work as they produce high-quality bergamot fruit in the orchards of Reggio di Calabria. The doTERRA Co-Impact Sourcing initiative in Italy allows families of Reggio di Calabria to provide for their families, boost the economy, and preserve the family tradition of growing some of the finest bergamot fruit in the world.

Watch the Bergamot Co-Impact Sourcing video to learn more about this initiative.

Oils that blend well with Bergamot oil

A Drop of Wisdom: How to Use Essential Oils

Our weekly series “Drops of Wisdom” is sponsored content, provided by dōTERRA for you to enjoy here on my site! That means this content is copyright to dōTERRA, not me. Enjoy this week’s Drop of Wisdom!

Are you looking for new ways to incorporate essential oil use in your life? This week we are highlighting the three main ways to use essential oils. Because of the purity of dōTERRA Essential oils, you can use them aromatically, topically, or internally. When using essential oils, pay attention to the labeling on the product because some oils have usage restrictions. Enjoy an essential oil aromatically by diffusing it through an essential oil diffuser, applying a drop to your hands and inhaling, or wearing it as a personal fragrance. You can benefit from topical use by using essential oils to give a back massage, applying it to a targeted area and rubbing it in, or by adding a drop or two to lotions or moisturizers. The last way to use essential oils is by ingesting them or taking them internally. Add a drop to a glass of water, under your tongue or in a veggie capsule and the oil will move throughout your body.

How Do You Use Essential Oils?

You don’t need a degree in chemistry or extensive training to know how to use essential oils effectively. With a basic understanding of safety precautions and application methods, it is easy to start using essential oils.

Get Started With Essential Oils

As you get started with essential oils keep these things in mind:

  • Determine the uses and benefits of the oil you intend to apply.
  • Follow any label and packaging instructions.
  • If you have specific concerns, consult with a healthcare professional first.

How to Apply Essential Oils

There are three ways to use essential oils:

1. Through smell. We call this “aromatic” use of essential oils. This includes any application method that helps you experience the aroma of the oil. You can use essential oils aromatically by:

  • Diffusing in an essential oil diffuser
  • Applying a drop to your hands and inhaling
  • Wearing as a personal fragrance

2. On your skin. “Topical” application of essential oils allows the oil to absorb into the skin. Some ways to use essential oils on your skin are:

  • Massage
  • Apply to targeted areas and rub in
  • Add to lotions or moisturizers

3. Ingesting, or “internal” use of essential oils allows the oil to be transported throughout your body. Make sure the essential oil is safe for internal use first, and then try one of these methods:

  • Add to a glass of water
  • Take in a veggie capsule
  • Put a drop under your tongue

Essential Oil Safety

Here are a few things you’ll want to keep in mind when you are learning how to use essential oils:

Essential Oil Safety Guidelines

  1. Avoid applying oils to sensitive areas like the nose, ears, eyes, or broken skin. Avoid using “hot oils” on the face.*
  2. Always read labels and package instructions before using an essential oil for the first time.
  3. Use dilution to minimize skin sensitivity.
  4. Be aware of oils with sun sensitivity warnings.
  5. Practice safe storage—keep oils out of reach of children.
  6. Always supervise young children when applying essential oils.
  7. If you have specific health concerns, talk to a healthcare professional before trying essential oils.

*Hot oils or strong oils include Cassia oil, Cinnamon Bark oilClove oilOregano oilThyme oil, and others.

How to Use Essential Oils Aromatically

Aromatic use of essential oils is especially powerful.

The sense of smell is a tool that can elicit powerful physiological, mental, and emotional responses. Essential oils are quickly absorbed by smell receptors, which have a direct link to the limbic system, which is the part of your brain that stores memories and emotions. Some essential oils induce uplifting or invigorating effects, while others are more calming.

Diffusing is one of the simplest ways to use essential oils aromatically. You can use an essential oil diffuser if you’d like but using essential oils aromatically does not require any special diffusing devices. You can achieve the same health benefits by simply placing a few drops of essential oil in the palm of your hand, cupping it around your nose, and breathing deeply.

Other Ways to Use Essential Oils Aromatically:

  • Apply oil to a cotton ball and place in the air vents of your vehicle
  • Mix oils in a spray bottle with water and mist over furniture, carpet, or linens
  • Add oil to a batch of laundry or to dryer sheets
  • Use in household surface cleaners

How to Use Essential Oils Topically (on the Skin)

Essential oils easily penetrate the skin for localized benefits, making topical (on the skin) application a great way to experience the benefits of essential oils. This is why doTERRA works to create potent essential oils that are powerful enough to promote healthy-looking skin, yet gentle enough to use on a daily basis.

When used topically, essential oils can improve complexion and skin tone. They can also be used as part of a soothing massage. Before topical application, be sure to follow all label recommendations and dilution instructions.

Beneficial Areas You Can Apply Essential Oils

  • Neck
  • Forehead and temples (unless the oil is classified as a “hot oil”)
  • Chest and abdomen
  • Arms, legs, bottoms of feet

Other Ways to Use Essential Oils Topically

  • Add a few drops of oil to a warm bath
  • Make a hot or cold compress by soaking a cloth in water, adding essential oils, and then applying to the desired area
  • Add oil to a lotion or moisturizer and then apply to skin

Sensitive Areas to be Avoided

  • Some facial areas, such as the skin around the eyes
  • Eyes and inner ears
  • Broken, damaged, or otherwise injured skin

How to Use Essential Oils Internally

When ingested, essential oils directly enter the bloodstream via the gastrointestinal tract, where they are transported throughout the rest of the body. Essential oils are readily transported to all organs of the body, including the brain.

Follow label recommendations and other professional guidelines for dosage when using essential oils internally.

Effective Methods of Internal Application

  • Add essential oils to water, smoothies, milk, tea, or other drinks
  • Put a drop under the tongue
  • Take in a veggie capsule or add to a small amount of applesauce or yogurt
  • Use oils in recipes for cooking or baking to replace fresh or dried herbs and spices (Remember, essential oils are much more potent than dried or fresh herbs and spices, so start with a very small amount. Use a toothpick for particularly potent oils.)

A highly aromatic plant, ginger has thick roots, long shoots with leaves, and pale flowers—though the rhizome or root of the ginger plant is most useful for flavoring and other applications. Myrrh Essential Oil Uses and Benefits

Due to its chemical design, Myrrh oil has proven to be helpful for cleansing, improving the appearance of the skin, and promoting grounding feelings or the balancing of emotions. The sesquiterpene ethers in Myrrh oil are known for their soothing properties, which is why Myrrh is useful for soothing the skin or soothing emotions. One of the primary sesquiterpene ethers in Myrrh oil, curzerene, is commonly added to skincare products because of its ability to improve the appearance of skin.

  1. Myrrh oil is well-known for its ability to cleanse the mouth and throat. To take advantage of the cleansing properties of Myrrh oil, incorporate it into your daily oral hygiene routine. Add one or two drops of Myrrh oil to your toothpaste when you want to add cleansing benefits. Or, for an effective mouth rinse, combine one drop of Myrrh oil and two ounces of water. Gargle the rinse for 30 seconds for an extra clean feeling.

  2. Another benefit of Myrrh oil is that it promotes a youthful-looking complexion and offers a soothing sensation to the skin. To use Myrrh oil for skin, consider adding one or two drops of the oil to your daily lotion or moisturizer. By incorporating Myrrh oil into your skincare routine, you can help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, especially when used daily.

  3. In addition to its benefits for the skin, Myrrh oil can be helpful for improving the health of your nails. If your cuticles are lacking hydration, try this DIY Cuticle Cream to help give your nails the moisture they need. With four simple ingredients—shea butter, beeswax, doTERRA Fractionated Coconut Oil, and Myrrh oil, your nails will soon find relief. This concoction can also be used on the hands, lips, or any dry skin.

  4. If you are looking for a more unique diffuser option, aside from floral or citrus essential oils, Myrrh oil is a perfect choice. Try diffusing Myrrh oil when you feel yourself or your environment becoming tense. This will help to promote emotional balance and well-being. You can also diffuse Myrrh oil when you want to uplift your mood or promote awareness. Myrrh essential oil is a popular oil to diffuse during the holidays because it can help maintain peaceful feelings throughout the home.

  5. The soothing benefits of Myrrh essential oil are very useful when it comes to shaving. Avoid irritated skin after shaving with this easy DIY Razor Relief Serum. This serum uses some of the best essential oils for skin, including FrankincenseLavenderMelaleucaHelichrysum, and Myrrh to help keep the skin calm and diminish any reactions after a shave. The lovely scent created by this combination of oils will linger on your skin and helps you escape the irritation of razor bumps every time you shave. The added bonus to this recipe is that it works well for both men and women.

  6. Sometimes you just need to have an at-home spa night. Myrrh essential oil really comes in handy in this situation. For example, you can mix two or three drops of Myrrh oil with doTERRA Spa Lotion to help add a smooth touch to callused or dry feet. You can also mix LemonFrankincense, and Myrrh oil (10 drops of each) with doTERRA Fractionated Coconut Oil to help soften the cuticles. If you are looking for more at-home spa treatments, take a look at our Girls Guide from the Living Magazine.

Fun Fact: In Arabic, the word myrrh means “bitter.”

Plant Description

Native to regions in Africa and Arabia, the Commiphora myrrha is a small tree that produces a sap that hardens into the resin known as myrrh. Typically a thorny tree or shrub, the myrrh tree produces few leaves and rugged, angled branches. Due to its highly aromatic nature, myrrh has been used since ancient times for medicine, perfumery, incense, religious purposes, and burials. When extracted, sap from the myrrh tree-also referred to as myrrh gum-eventually hardens and dries into myrrh resin. When the myrrh tree is harvested, it “bleeds” the tree sap, which then turns hard and glossy. Through steam distillation, myrrh resin is converted into an essential oil with a dry, woody aroma.

Oils that Blend Well with Myrrh Essential Oil
Myrrh can be categorized as one of the wood essential oils. The smoky, dry aroma of Myrrh oil is rather unique; however, the woody and herbaceous notes of the oil allow it to blend well with spicy, floral, or citrus essential oils. Try blending Myrrh oil with any warm, spicy oil like FrankincenseSandalwood, or Clove. For an intriguing, fresh scent, blend Myrrh with floral or leafy oils like LavenderEucalyptus, or Jasmine. When you want to produce a sweet, herbaceous scent, consider blending Myrrh with LemonJuniper Berry, or Grapefruit essential oil.

Cautions
Possible skin sensitivity. Keep out of reach of children. If you are pregnant, nursing, or under a doctor’s care, consult your physician. Avoid contact with eyes, inner ears, and sensitive areas.

Grapefruit oil is becoming one of the most popular essential oils on the market. The bright, energizing aroma and many benefits of Grapefruit essential oil make it a fan favorite in the world of essential oils. Many people ask, “What is Grapefruit oil used for?” It turns out that many enjoy using Grapefruit essential oil for much more than simply its taste or smell.

So, what are the benefits and uses of Grapefruit essential oil? Keep reading to find out!

Use Grapefruit oil for weight loss
You may have heard people talking about using Grapefruit oil for weight loss. Experimental research shows that diffusing Grapefruit oil may help to curb cravings. If you’re trying to lose weight, consider diffusing Grapefruit oil to increase your motivation. Additionally, when taken internally, Grapefruit oil can help to support blood sugar levels that are already in the normal range.*

Use Grapefruit oil for skin
Do you love the smell of Grapefruit oil ? Keep its lovely aroma with you all day and improve the appearance of your skin by incorporating Grapefruit oil into your skincare routine. Try adding Grapefruit oil to your nightly skincare regimen to reduce the appearance of blemishes. Remember though, as a citrus oil, the use of Grapefruit oil on the skin poses a risk for sun sensitivity, so avoid ultra-violet rays for at least 12 hours after applying Grapefruit to the skin.

Use Grapefruit oil to support a healthy metabolism*
Did you know that Grapefruit oil can help promote a healthy metabolism?* Because it contains the chemical constituent limonene, Grapefruit essential oil has internal cleansing and purifying properties.* This is why it’s commonly used to support a healthy metabolism and to gently cleanse the body with detoxifying benefits.* To take full advantage of these benefits, simply add one to two drops of Grapefruit oil to a glass of water, and drink.

Use Grapefruit oil to create an uplifting environment
With an encouraging, cheering effect on the emotions, Grapefruit is the perfect essential oil when you want to promote an uplifting atmosphere. Feeling bored and sluggish at work in the afternoon? Try diffusing Grapefruit oil at your desk. Need a little pick-me-up in the morning? A Drop of Wisdom: Vetiver Essential Oil

Our weekly series “Drops of Wisdom” is sponsored content, provided by dōTERRA for you to enjoy here on my site! That means this content is copyright to dōTERRA, not me. Enjoy this week’s Drop of Wisdom!

Vetiver Oil

The roots of the vetiver plant are unique in their ability to grow downward, creating a thick tangle of roots in the ground. The root of the hearty vetiver plant is the origin of Vetiver oil and produces a fragrance that is earthy and strong. This aroma has been used among many perfume industries and is a notable characteristic of Vetiver oil. Vetiver oil is composed of multiple sesquiterpenes, giving Vetiver oil a grounding effect on emotions. This grounding effect makes Vetiver oil a commonly used essential oil in massage practices and topical and aromatic uses. Vetiver oil can also be taken internally to support a healthy immune system.*

Where to Buy Vetiver Oil: To buy a potent and pure bottle of Vetiver, visit the Vetiver oil product page.

When buying essential oils, there are two factors that are crucial to consider—potency and purity. The more potent and pure an essential oil is, the greater its ability to meet individual needs.

With a mission to provide the highest standard of pure essential oils, doTERRA submits each batch of essential oils to the CPTG Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade® protocol. This protocol contains a series of strict tests that prove the purity of each batch of essential oil. When the oils are found pure, they are sold so that people around the world can receive their benefits. When you purchase doTERRA essential oils, you can feel confident knowing that the oils they receive are pure, potent, and of the highest quality.

Keep reading to learn more about how to use Vetiver oil.

Vetiver Oil Uses and Benefits

  1. When experiencing anxious, unnerved, or stressed feelings, use Vetiver oil aromatically or topically. Vetiver oil is rich in sesquiterpenes, which contain grounding properties. When used on the skin or inhaled, Vetiver essential oil can help provide a calming and grounding effect on emotions.

  2. Aid your immune system by taking Vetiver oil internally.* Vetiver oil contains immune-supporting properties and is a great way to fortify your immune system.* For healthy immune support, place a couple of drops of Vetiver essential oil into a doTERRA Veggie Capsule and take it internally.*

  3. School can be taxing and sometimes stressful for children. After a difficult day at school, help your child relax by applying Vetiver oil to your child’s neck and feet. This will help promote calm and grounded feelings.

  4. Give your body a little TLC with a Vetiver essential oil bath. For best results, fill the bathtub with warm water and add a couple of drops of Vetiver essential oil the water. These simple steps will provide you with an ideal bath that is perfect for deep relaxation. The aromatic benefits of Vetiver oil will also aid in creating a soothing and calming atmosphere.

  5. Traveling always comes with certain risks—environmental threats being one of them. To help prepare your body for traveling and a change in environment, take Vetiver essential oil internally. For best results, combine one to two drops of Vetiver oil with Lemon oil in a veggie capsule. This powerful combination of oils will help support a healthy immune system.*

  6. Vetiver oil’s aroma is sweet, woody, and smoky–emitting a strong, earthy scent. Use the earthy tones of Vetiver essential oil as a base for your favorite DIY diffuser blends. Adding Vetiver essential oil to a diffuser blend will provide aromatic benefits that have a calming, grounding effect on emotions.

  7. Sleep is extremely important for the health of both the mind and body. When we do not receive adequate sleep or have too many sleepless nights, our body functions begin to slow down. To help promote a restful night’s sleep, rub Vetiver oil on the bottom of your feet. Vetiver oil is a great essential oil for sleep and relaxation and can help give your body the sleep it needs.

  8. Give your body a powerful boost by adding one to two drops of Vetiver essential oil to your tea or hot drinks during the winter months. Vetiver essential oil contains immune-supporting properties that will help fortify your body against seasonal threats.*

  9. Because of Vetiver oil’s grounding effects, it is commonly used for massages. After a long day of standing, apply a few drops of Vetiver essential oil to your feet and slowly massage the oil in. A Vetiver oil massage is perfect after a long day, and the aromatic features of the oil can also provide a grounding and calming effect on emotions.

Plant Description

The Vetiver plant, Vetiveria zizanioides, is a member of the grass family. The grass of the plant is a vibrant green color and grows straight and vertical.  Unlike other grasses, the root system of Vetiver grows down, making it ideal for helping prevent erosion and providing soil stabilization. The many roots of the plant grow in large clusters underground. doTERRA obtains Vetiver essential oil from the roots of the vetiver plant.

Chemistry of Vetiver Essential Oil

Main Chemical Components: Carvone, isovalencenol, khusimol The main chemical constituents of Vetiver essential oil are carvone, isovalencenol, and khusimol. Both isovalencenol and khusimol are sesquiterpenes that are part of the alcohols functional group. These chemicals have grounding properties and are what makes Vetiver essential oil a grounding oil. Carvone is a monoterpene that is a member of the ketones functional group. Carvone contains energizing properties that add to the beneficial chemical properties of Vetiver essential oil. All in all, I am very impressed with DoTerra’s onGuard Cleaner Concentrate. First, it’s all natural and non-toxic, so no need for “well-ventilated area” or protective gloves when using it. It’s safe to use around kids (even babies!) and pets. Second, it actually CLEANS. No elbow grease required. Even windows and mirrors. All in all, this one cleaner concentrate can and has replaced every single cleaner product that I used to use around the house. Every single one. It’s highly concentrated so one bottle actually lasts a surprisingly long time. I made a video of using this cleaner to tackle a deep-cleaning of my stovetop that had been neglected for way too long, so check it out below… Continue reading DoTerra OnGuard Cleaner Concentrate Review & Demonstration
