Have you been running around trying to get Christmas taken care of for your loved ones? Try treating yourself to this do-it-yourself Whipped Peppermint Foot Lotion and show your feet how much you appreciate them. This is a simple and light lotion that includes natural ingredients like Peppermint oil and Tea Tree (Melaleuca) oil. Whipped Foot Lotion with Peppermint oil will not only leave your feet smelling fresh, but it will also transform your sandpaper heels into a silky dream.

Peppermint Oil

The peppermint plant is a versatile perennial herb that has been cherished since ancient times. The plant’s first recorded appearance dates back to 1000 BC when dried peppermint leaves were found entombed in ancient Egyptian pyramids. Throughout human history, this herb has been valued as a multi-purpose plant and an essential oil whose components are now used by cosmetic, culinary, and health industries around the world. When you use it internally, Peppermint oil is also well known for its ability to help alleviate occasional upset stomach and promote healthy respiratory function.* With so many facets and uses, it is no surprise that Peppermint oil continues to be one of doTERRA’s best-selling and highly-favored essential oils.

Where to Buy Peppermint Oil

To buy a pure bottle of Peppermint, visit doTERRA’s Peppermint oil product page.

Many essential oils available in the industry contain filler substances and contaminants that weaken the purity and power of the oil. However, at doTERRA, we know that a pure bottle of essential oil has the potential to change lives; that’s why doTERRA’s mission is to provide essential oils that are highly effective and free of additives and harmful contaminants. Our Peppermint oil is produced in the Pacific Northwest of the United States and other regions of the world. We guarantee pure essential oils through the CPTG Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade® quality protocol. This protocol includes a series of strict tests that ensure the essentials oils we sell are free from filler substances or impurities—making the doTERRA essential oils you purchase powerful and pure.

Peppermint Oil Uses and Benefits

  1. Instead of reaching for artificially flavored gum or candy when you need to freshen your breath, look to Peppermint oil to do the job. Mix a drop of Peppermint oil with a drop of Lemon essential oil in water, take a sip, and swirl it around in your mouth for a healthy, refreshing mouth rinse. The most beneficial ingredient in this mouth rinse is the menthol, a component found in Peppermint oil. Menthol has been used for centuries for its ability to cleanse and freshen. When you use a drop of Peppermint oil in your mouth rinse, the menthol is what gives it a fresh and minty kick. This powerful and fresh element is why Peppermint is found in many oral health products today. When using this Peppermint oil mouth rinse, you will experience a pleasurable, cooling feeling and you will walk away confident, knowing that your breath smells just as good as it feels.

  2. Peppermint oil is a culinary wonder and has been used to add a fresh boost to meals in kitchens all across the world. However, the use of Peppermint oil is not just limited to cooked dishes; it also makes a great addition to any smoothie. Try adding one to two drops of Peppermint oil to your favorite smoothie recipe for a burst of minty flavor. By adding the freshness of Peppermint oil to your morning smoothie, you can start your day feeling more refreshed than ever.

Peppermint oil also turns plain water into a cooling and refreshing treat. When the summer heat seems to overwhelm you, add one drop of Peppermint oil with a cut fruit like strawberries or limes for a deliciously infused water. Peppermint oil makes a healthy addition to any drink because it helps promote healthy respiratory function and clear breathing, and by adding doTERRA Peppermint oil to something as simple as the water you drink, you encourage healthy respiratory function in your body* while simultaneously changing up the flavor to your drinks.

  3. Peppermint oil can be used aromatically to enliven the senses and promote a feeling of energy. This powerful oil can be extremely beneficial on its own, but when you add the right combination of essential oils to Peppermint oil, the synergy of the combination of oils leads to even more benefits. For example, try placing one drop of Peppermint oil in the palm of your hand, add one drop of Wild Orange oil and one drop of Frankincense oil, and inhale by cupping your hands over your nose. This simple aromatic recipe is perfect for a mid-day pick-me-up.

Including Wild Orange and Frankincense in this Peppermint oil mixture adds to its aromatic benefits. Wild Orange carries a sweet and fresh citrus smell that is used to uplift the mind and body, while Frankincense is valued for its ability to promote feelings of relaxation. By combining these two essential oils with Peppermint oil’s soothing properties, the blend becomes an aromatic powerhouse that will have you feeling relaxed and energized for the tasks ahead.

  4. Try this do-it-yourself Whipped Peppermint Foot Lotion and show your feet how much you appreciate them. This is a simple and light lotion that includes natural ingredients like Peppermint oil and Tea Tree (Melaleuca) oil. After a long day, this DIY lotion can help you unwind and give your feet the delightful cooling sensation they need. For best results, try applying this lotion generously to your feet and then putting socks on before you go to bed. Whipped Foot Lotion with Peppermint oil will not only leave your feet smelling fresh, but it will also transform your sandpaper heels into a silky dream.

If you are looking for a way to share the benefits of Peppermint oil with your friends, try making and sharing this DIY Candy Cane Sugar Scrub. This festive sugar scrub helps exfoliate and moisturize the hands, feet, and body, and it makes for a great seasonal gift. Not only will the scrub produce soft and smooth skin, but its Peppermint oil base will provide a soothing sensation wherever it is applied.

  5. Being outside in the sun can be a great way to uplift your mood, but sometimes too much sun exposure can quickly end your fun. Try this homemade After Sun Soothing Spray to maintain healthy-looking skin after too much sun. This soothing spray is filled with three powerful essential oils that calm and soothe irritated skin. One of the primary oils used in this spray is Peppermint oil. Peppermint oil is a perfect after-sun essential oil for the same reason it is useful for oral care–its high content of Menthol. Tea Tree (Melaleuca) essential oil and Lavender essential oil are two additional ingredients in this DIY that will improve the appearance of skin.

  6. Looking for a long-lasting way to smell the sweet and minty aroma of Peppermint oil? Use this simple yet invigorating diffuser blend and enjoy this fresh aroma in your home, office, or classroom. To make this blend, combine two drops of Peppermint oil, three drops of Grapefruit, and two drops of Sandalwood into a diffuser. Using Peppermint oil in your diffuser will produce a cooling, invigorating vapor. Additionally, the grounding and mood-enhancing properties of Sandalwood and the uplifting benefits of Grapefruit will work well with the soothing and relaxing effects of Peppermint oil to produce an energizing and calming aroma that all will enjoy.

  7. Peppermint oil makes a great addition to many dishes, especially desserts. Try using this Black Bean Brownie recipe with Peppermint oil and put a nutritious and delicious spin on the traditional chocolate brownie. At first, making a sweet treat with black beans may seem strange or even off-putting, but don’t worry, black beans have a very mild flavor and are extremely rich, creamy, and full of protein. Once you venture out with this recipe, you won’t want to go back. To create an extra pop of flavor, add a couple of drops of Peppermint oil for a delightful and refreshing flavor.

  8. The soothing components found in Peppermint oil make it a desirable oil for massages. Try adding Peppermint oil to your massage experiences and enjoy the pleasurable cooling feelings it brings to your skin while immersing yourself in its sweet and relaxing aroma. A great massage companion to Peppermint oil is Lavender. The combination of Peppermint oil and Lavender oil will produce optimal soothing feelings that will add to any massage. You can also try adding Peppermint oil to your shampoo or conditioner for a stimulating hair massage that will provide the pampering your scalp deserves.

  9. If you’re finding more than your share of spiders or bugs in your home, Peppermint oil provides a perfect solution to ward off those creepy crawlers. Many bugs and spiders dislike the potent smell of Peppermint oil. Consequently, Peppermint oil is used as a home remedy to repel bugs naturally. Try placing one to three drops of Peppermint oil on a cotton ball and placing it in the corners of your bathroom, bedroom, kitchen, laundry room, or wherever you think these unwanted guests might be.

  10. Need to stay alert? Try Peppermint oil! If you or someone you know has trouble staying awake during the day and would like a natural method to feel alert, Peppermint oil used topically or aromatically can help. Because of the invigorating and cooling effects that pure Peppermint oil produces when it comes in contact with skin, Peppermint is an ideal oil for staying attentive and aware. In order to create this extra boost, place 1–2 drops of Peppermint oil on your fingertips and then rub your temples. The invigorating aroma of Peppermint oil will help give you the natural sense of alertness you desire when you need it most.

Fun Fact

Peppermint’s scientific name is Mentha piperita. In ancient Greek Mythology, Minthe (also known as Mentha), a nymph, was transformed by Queen Persephone into a sweet-smelling mint.

Plant Description

Peppermint oil comes from the leaves of the peppermint plant. The peppermint plant is a hybrid of water mint and spearmint plants. This cooling and relaxing herb is characterized by its square stem, dark green leaves, and small bunches of light lavender flowers. The peppermint plant can grow to be approximately 18–36 inches tall and can be found in a variety of different areas. Peppermint is known to grow best by streams or in wet locations with a lot of rainfall. Due to its specific water needs, Peppermint is cultivated in Europe, Asia, and North America.

Chemistry of Peppermint Oil

Main Chemical Components: Menthol, Menthone, 1,8-Cineole

The main chemical component in Peppermint oil is menthol. Menthol has a monoterpene backbone with an alcohol functional group. Menthol contains energizing properties that contribute to the overall energizing effect of Peppermint oil. Menthol is known to soothe the smooth muscle that lines the colon.* This relaxant property occurs due to menthol’s ability to keep calcium channels working optimally. The relaxing of colon smooth muscle reduces the movement of bowels, which eases occasional bowel looseness. Because of this effect, menthol is a main contributor to Peppermint oil’s ability to promote digestive health.* When Peppermint oil is swallowed, typically it is followed by a cooling sensation. This response happens because menthol activates the TRPM8 receptor, an indicator of cold.3* To learn more about the chemical components of Peppermint oil or other essential oils, visit the doTERRA Science Blog

A Drop of Wisdom: Rose Essential Oil

Our weekly series “Drops of Wisdom” is sponsored content, provided by dōTERRA for you to enjoy here on my site! That means this content is copyright to dōTERRA, not me. Enjoy this week’s Drop of Wisdom!

Pamper a sister, friend, or mother in your life with the gift of dōTERRA’s Rose oil this holiday season. Sought after for its powerful aroma and emotional benefits, Rose essential oil is the perfect gift during the gloomy winter months. Apply a drop to any skin imperfections to promote an even skin tone, regulate moisture levels, and increase healthy-looking complexion. Diffuse Rose essential oil before any occasion to enjoy the sweet, floral aroma, and calming properties.

What’s Special About Rose Essential Oil?

As one of the lowest yielding essential oils, it takes approximately 60,000 fresh petals of the Rosa damascena plant to produce 5 mL of precious Rose essential oil through the steam distillation process. Because of that low yield, Rose is very hard to come by. But the scarcity of Rose is only a minor factor in its value in the essential oil world. The essence of one of the world’s most beautiful and aromatic flowers produces one of the most complex, distinctive, and health-benefiting essential oils.

Symbolic of love, beauty, and seduction, roses have been adored for thousands of years. Persians perfected the distillation of rosewater and rose essential oil during the Middle Ages, and Rose became famous for its ability to improve the complexion throughout Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. Today, rose bushes are well-known ornamental plants throughout the world and Rose essential oil graces high-end lotions, fragrances, cosmetics, and nutritional products.

There are hundreds of rose species in the world. The damask rose (Rose damascene) originates from Asia and is one of the most desirable roses, due to its superior fragrance, its scarcity, and its remarkable emotional benefits. The aroma of damask rose is indulgent and relaxing. It is also said to be rejuvenating.

Using Rose Essential Oil

Rose is primarily composed of four dominant volatile aromatic compounds: citronellol, geraniol, nonadecane, and heneicosane. The monoterpene alcohols, citronellol and geraniol, are often associated with floral essential oils—geranium also contains rich concentrations—and they share more than a similar chemical makeup. There is good reason why Rose essential oil is valued so highly in personal care; both compounds are effective at supporting a healthy and clean appearance of the skin and hair. That cleansing power is also evident when used on surfaces. Nonadecane and heneicosane are a little more mysterious, and a lot less scientifically investigated, but based upon the breadth of research, they are a great example of essential oil synergy and exactly why Rose offers such profound benefits. Greater than the sum of its parts, an abundance of experimental and human clinical research has shown that Rose provides powerful benefits when used aromatically and topically.

How do you use Rose oil?

  • Apply to pulse points to uplift mood throughout the day.
  • Use on areas of concern twice daily to reduce the appearance of skin imperfections.
  • Apply to neck and wrists for a romantic personal fragrance.
  • Apply to the palms of your hands, cup your hands over your nose, and inhale, deeply for an uplifting sensation.

  9. While Lemon essential oil holds many cleansing and purifying properties when used topically, it can also be very beneficial when taken internally. When seasonal changes start to bother you, try taking Lemon internally to assist with seasonal respiratory discomfort.* Aside from assisting with respiratory discomfort, Lemon oil can also be taken internally to naturally cleanse the body and aid in digestion.* When taking Lemon essential oil internally, dilute one drop on 4 fl. oz. of liquid. As mentioned above, you can also find creative ways to add Lemon to your water. Once you’ve discovered your preferred method for taking Lemon oil internally, you’ll be able to enjoy the benefits of respiratory assistance and body cleansing.*

  10. Stubborn, sticky residue used to be an annoyance, but with the help of Lemon essential oil, you can get rid of goopy messes without hours of scrubbing or the use of toxic chemicals. Did you peel the price tag off of your new water bottle, only to find a sticky residue left behind? Does your toddler’s fascination with stickers frequently result in an adhesive mess on the bedroom wall? Did your teenager leave behind a big sticky mess after making a PB&J sandwich five hours ago? Normally, these situations would mean a long night of scrubbing for you, with remnants of a sticky mess still left behind. However, adding a little Lemon essential oil to a rag will help you get rid of these messes (and others like them) in practically no time at all.

Plant Description
Lemon essential oil is extracted from the lemon rinds, or peel of the lemon. The lemon rinds are cold pressed to produce lemon essential oil. An expression distillation process, cold pressing is typically used for citrus oils when producing essential oils, and uses high mechanical pressure to produce oil from the lemon rind. While other distillation processes use heat, the process of cold pressing merely squeezes the oil from the rind, with the help of mechanical pressure.

Fun Fact:
In one year, a single lemon tree has the potential to produce between 500 and 600 pounds of lemons. It typically takes around 75 lemons to fill a 15mL essential oil bottle.

Chemistry of Lemon Essential Oil
Main Chemical components: Limonene, ß pinenes, γ-terpimene

When we examine the scientific makeup of Lemon essential oil, it is clear that Lemon can’t help but provide an energizing, uplifting feeling when diffused or applied topically—it just comes naturally! Lemon oil is comprised of chemicals called monoterpenes, which are generally known to have uplifting characteristics. Along with other citrus oils, Lemon is composed of Limonene and beta-Pinene, two monoterpenes that are known for their uplifting properties.

Lemon essential oil shares chemical components like Limonene and beta-Pinene with other doTERRA essential oils like Bergamot, Wild Orange, Grapefruit, Lime, and Douglas Fir. That is why all of these oils, including Lemon oil, are often used to promote a positive mood and create an uplifting environment.

Sourcing
doTERRA sources Lemon essential oil from citrus orchards in Sicily, Italy, where families who have grown lemon and bergamot for generations help grow and harvest the lemons that are eventually used for doTERRA Lemon oil.  In the past, economic downturn caused many Sicilian orchards to close; however, through Co-Impact Sourcing®, doTERRA has provided a business opportunity for growers who wish to continue their family tradition of running an orchard. Watch this video to learn more about doTERRA’s Co-Impact Sourcing initiative in Sicily.

Oils that blend well with Lemon essential oil

New Collection! This is all Native Land!

I am proud to announce a new collection! Unveiling this week is my “This is all Native Land” collection.

The inspiration for this collection is rather obvious to those of us with indigenous roots, but others may not know… it isn’t generally taught in school. For those of you who are not indigenous, let me break the news: Native Americans lived here long before Columbus ever set sail for the New World. THIS IS ALL NATIVE LAND brings you the first installment in a series of collections that my Father-in-Law requested for me to design which brings forth the fact that all non-indigenous people in America are either immigrants (usually illegal… there was no immigration agency when the Pilgrims landed!) or the descendants of those immigrants. Columbus discovered nothing that Native Americans hadn’t already settled and lived on for thousands of years and my Father-in-Law (Lumbee/Apache!) wants some merch with that thrown out into the realm of the obvious. So, Daddy, here ya go!

Lemongrass Oil Product Description
Grown by family farmers in Southern India, lemongrass produces a smoky, citrus essential oil that offers a variety of benefits to the user. For years, lemongrass has been used in Asian cuisine for soups, teas, curries, and seafood. However, the uses for Lemongrass oil extend far beyond the kitchen. With a pungent aroma, Lemongrass Oil is a favorite for massage, offers purifying benefits for the skin, and promotes a positive outlook. It can also support healthy digestion when used internally.* Whether applied topically, used aromatically, or taken internally, the uses and benefits of Lemongrass oil are widely diverse.

Where to Buy Lemongrass Oil

If you are ready to add Lemongrass oil to your essential oil collection, visit our Lemongrass oil page to see how to purchase your own. Each doTERRA essential oil undergoes extensive testing using CPTG Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade® methods, in order to ensure the purity and quality of each bottle of oil. When you are looking for high quality, potent Lemongrass essential oil, doTERRA can provide a refreshing, pure oil that has been created with extreme care.

Lemongrass Oil Uses and Benefits

  1. Did you know that Lemongrass essential oil can help support healthy digestion when taken internally?* The chemical makeup of Lemongrass includes aldehydes, which are known for their ability to maintain healthy gastrointestinal function when ingested.* To reap these benefits, add a few drops of Lemongrass oil to your food or beverages to add flavor and provide dietary support. You can also place a few drops in a doTERRA Veggie Capsule to promote healthy digestive function.* You can even combine Lemongrass oil with Peppermint oil in a capsule to support healthy gastrointestinal function and maintain healthy digestion.*

  2. One way to experience the benefits of Lemongrass essential oil is by diffusing the oil in your diffuser at home. Consider diffusing Lemongrass oil when you want to overpower feelings of nervousness or eliminate mental fatigue. Diffusing Lemongrass oil can also help promote a positive outlook and heighten your awareness. Another benefit of diffusing Lemongrass oil is the refreshing, herbaceous aroma of the oil. If you want to experience the aromatic benefits of Lemongrass essential oil but don’t have time to diffuse it, place one drop in the palm of your hand, rub your hands together, and inhale softly for up to 30 seconds or longer as desired.

  3. The aldehydes in Lemongrass oil also make Lemongrass useful for naturally repelling insects. Diffusing Lemongrass oil or even using it topically can help keep bugs away. Diffuse Lemongrass oil inside or outside on your porch or patio to keep away mosquitos and bugs. If you are worried about keeping bugs off of your body, rub or spritz Lemongrass oil on your skin before you go outside.

  4. Because Lemongrass is a soothing oil, it is commonly used for massage. The refreshing aroma combined with the oil’s soothing properties makes it a popular choice for massage therapy. It also holds purifying benefits for the skin, making it a desirable oil to use during massage sessions. If you use Lemongrass oil for massage, dilute it with a carrier oil like doTERRA Fractionated Coconut Oil. Apply the diluted oil to muscles and joints for a soothing sensation that makes for a tranquil massage.

  5. Possibly one of the most common uses for Lemongrass is in culinary settings. For many years, Lemongrass has been a common ingredient to add flavor to Asian soups, curries, beef, fish, teas, and more. It is also widely used in baked goods or candies in the food industry because of its distinct flavor. If you want to utilize the powerful flavor of Lemongrass essential oil, consider adding a few drops to entrees or meat dishes. Looking for an essential oil recipe that uses Lemongrass oil? Try our Coconut Lemongrass Red Lentil Soup and enjoy the unique flavors of Lemongrass, ginger root, coconut milk, lentils, and more.

  6. The soothing properties of Lemongrass oil also make it helpful for the body after physical activity. Consider applying Lemongrass essential oil topically where needed after a hard workout to utilize the soothing properties of the oil. You can also dilute Lemongrass and apply it after a long run for a refreshing feeling. No matter what kind of workout you choose, Lemongrass oil can help soothe the body after exertion during physical activity.

  7. Lemongrass contains purifying and toning benefits for the skin and can be used in your skincare routine to help promote pure, toned skin. Consider adding a few drops of Lemongrass oil to your daily cleanser or moisturizer to help tone and purify the skin. Similar to Melaleuca, Lemongrass oil can also help promote the appearance of healthy fingernails and toenails. To experience these benefits of Lemongrass, try combining it with Melaleuca essential oil and apply the mixture to your fingernails and toenails to help them look and feel clean.

Plant Description

The evergreen lemongrass plant, also known as Cymbopogon flexuosus, is a tall, perennial plant native to India and other surrounding countries. Lemongrass has long, aromatic leaves that are cut and steam-distilled to produce Lemongrass essential oil.  The lemongrass plant is often used to extract essential oil to be used in perfumes, detergents, soaps, etc. The oil can also be taken internally, which makes lemongrass quite popular in the food industry for baked goods, gums, and candies.

Chemistry of Lemongrass Oil

Main Chemical Components: Geranial, neral
The chemical makeup of Lemongrass essential oil includes the constituents geranial and neral, which are aldehydes. Typically, aldehydes are known for their distinctly potent fragrances, which is evident in the case of Lemongrass oil. Aldehydes have many functions within essential oils, including the ability to cleanse surfaces. They can also lessen feelings of stress when diffused. However, essential oils with geranial and neral are particularly known for helping to maintain healthy gastrointestinal function when used internally.* Geranial and neral are also known as soothing aldehydes, which is why Lemongrass and Melissa oil are both soothing oils that share similarities in chemical structure.

Sourcing

Harvesting lemongrass is a labor-intensive process, but for families in Southern India, it has been a way of life for generations. doTERRA chose Southern India as a sourcing location because of the high levels of rainfall in the area. A greater amount of rainfall creates a higher citral content in the lemongrass, which makes it superior for essential oil use. During harvest time, farmers hike five miles up a steep mountain and work for roughly seven days to harvest a 100-acre plantation. Lemongrass is harvested by hand, using a sickle—which is part of what makes the harvesting process so physically demanding. Once the lemongrass is harvested and gathered, the farmers walk the five miles back down the mountain, each carrying a lemongrass bundle on top of their head.
After the lemongrass is harvested, it goes through the process of steam distillation. Once distilled, the crude oil is passed on to a manufacturer who produces the Lemongrass oil. While the oil is with the manufacturer, it goes through stages of refining, filtration, and blending. The oil then undergoes a series of tests before it qualifies for export—the oil must be of the highest quality to be acceptable to distribute. Though the process of harvesting and producing Lemongrass oil requires hard labor and attention to detail, this process matches the high standards that doTERRA has for producing quality essential oils.

Oils that blend well with Lemongrass oil

Because Lemongrass oil includes subtle citrus notes; a pungent, smoky aroma; and a refreshing, herbaceous scent, it blends well for diffusion with a variety of oils that share similar qualities. Blend Lemongrass oil with the herbal scents of Basil, the fresh aroma of Spearmint, or the warm, spicy fragrance of Cardamom oil.

A Drop of Wisdom: Vetiver Essential Oil

Our weekly series “Drops of Wisdom” is sponsored content, provided by dōTERRA for you to enjoy here on my site! That means this content is copyright to dōTERRA, not me. Enjoy this week’s Drop of Wisdom!

Vetiver Oil

The roots of the vetiver plant are unique in their ability to grow downward, creating a thick tangle of roots in the ground. The root of the hearty vetiver plant is the origin of Vetiver oil and produces a fragrance that is earthy and strong. This aroma has been used among many perfume industries and is a notable characteristic of Vetiver oil. Vetiver oil is composed of multiple sesquiterpenes, giving Vetiver oil a grounding effect on emotions. This grounding effect makes Vetiver oil a commonly used essential oil in massage practices and topical and aromatic uses. Vetiver oil can also be taken internally to support a healthy immune system.*

Where to Buy Vetiver Oil: To buy a potent and pure bottle of Vetiver, visit the Vetiver oil product page.

When buying essential oils, there are two factors that are crucial to consider—potency and purity. The more potent and pure an essential oil is, the greater its ability to meet individual needs.

With a mission to provide the highest standard of pure essential oils, doTERRA submits each batch of essential oils to the CPTG Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade® protocol. This protocol contains a series of strict tests that prove the purity of each batch of essential oil. When the oils are found pure, they are sold so that people around the world can receive their benefits. When you purchase doTERRA essential oils, you can feel confident knowing that the oils they receive are pure, potent, and of the highest quality.

Keep reading to learn more about how to use Vetiver oil.

Vetiver Oil Uses and Benefits

  1. When experiencing anxious, unnerved, or stressed feelings, use Vetiver oil aromatically or topically. Vetiver oil is rich in sesquiterpenes, which contain grounding properties. When used on the skin or inhaled, Vetiver essential oil can help provide a calming and grounding effect on emotions.

  2. Aid your immune system by taking Vetiver oil internally.* Vetiver oil contains immune-supporting properties and is a great way to fortify your immune system.* For healthy immune support, place a couple of drops of Vetiver essential oil into a doTERRA Veggie Capsule and take it internally.*

  3. School can be taxing and sometimes stressful for children. After a difficult day at school, help your child relax by applying Vetiver oil to your child’s neck and feet. This will help promote calm and grounded feelings.

  4. Give your body a little TLC with a Vetiver essential oil bath. For best results, fill the bathtub with warm water and add a couple of drops of Vetiver essential oil the water. These simple steps will provide you with an ideal bath that is perfect for deep relaxation. The aromatic benefits of Vetiver oil will also aid in creating a soothing and calming atmosphere.

  5. Traveling always comes with certain risks—environmental threats being one of them. To help prepare your body for traveling and a change in environment, take Vetiver essential oil internally. For best results, combine one to two drops of Vetiver oil with Lemon oil in a veggie capsule. This powerful combination of oils will help support a healthy immune system.*

  6. Vetiver oil’s aroma is sweet, woody, and smoky–emitting a strong, earthy scent. Use the earthy tones of Vetiver essential oil as a base for your favorite DIY diffuser blends. Adding Vetiver essential oil to a diffuser blend will provide aromatic benefits that have a calming, grounding effect on emotions.

  7. Sleep is extremely important for the health of both the mind and body. When we do not receive adequate sleep or have too many sleepless nights, our body functions begin to slow down. To help promote a restful night’s sleep, rub Vetiver oil on the bottom of your feet. Vetiver oil is a great essential oil for sleep and relaxation and can help give your body the sleep it needs.

  8. Give your body a powerful boost by adding one to two drops of Vetiver essential oil to your tea or hot drinks during the winter months. Vetiver essential oil contains immune-supporting properties that will help fortify your body against seasonal threats.*

  9. Because of Vetiver oil’s grounding effects, it is commonly used for massages. After a long day of standing, apply a few drops of Vetiver essential oil to your feet and slowly massage the oil in. A Vetiver oil massage is perfect after a long day, and the aromatic features of the oil can also provide a grounding and calming effect on emotions.

Plant Description

The Vetiver plant, Vetiveria zizanioides, is a member of the grass family. The grass of the plant is a vibrant green color and grows straight and vertical.  Unlike other grasses, the root system of Vetiver grows down, making it ideal for helping prevent erosion and providing soil stabilization. The many roots of the plant grow in large clusters underground. doTERRA obtains Vetiver essential oil from the roots of the vetiver plant.

Chemistry of Vetiver Essential Oil

Main Chemical Components: Carvone, isovalencenol, khusimol The main chemical constituents of Vetiver essential oil are carvone, isovalencenol, and khusimol. Both isovalencenol and khusimol are sesquiterpenes that are part of the alcohols functional group. These chemicals have grounding properties and are what makes Vetiver essential oil a grounding oil. Carvone is a monoterpene that is a member of the ketones functional group. Carvone contains energizing properties that add to the beneficial chemical properties of Vetiver essential oil. Big Changes Are Coming!

You may have noticed that I haven’t published a new design in a few weeks. Yeah… about that…

Sorry! You see, I’ve been crazy busy. I have a TON of ideas floating through my head. Usually, at what seems like the worst times possible. Isn’t that how it always seems to happen with us crazy artsy-types? Anyway, in the midst of my designing frenzy that usually accompanies these creative moments, I got a notification from my printing house. They are discontinuing dozens of products and literally THOUSANDS of color options from products they are keeping. Totally destroyed my creative moment.

You see, my storefront workflow looks kinda like this:

  1. I get creative.
  2. I spend hours, usually days, pouring over a design to make it perfect.
  3. I send my design to the printing house. They hang on to it for me.
  4. I add my design to select merchandise that the printing house keeps stocked, so they can quickly and easily print up an order.
  5. You find something that you fall totally in love with!
  6. So, you go ahead and buy it. You just HAVE to, after all! You love it! 🙂
  7. The printing house prints my design on the merchandise you choose and sends it out to your doorstep for me.
  8. You love your awesome new stuff and check out my other designs (I hope, at least!) 😉

But now I realized there’s a break in my work flow.. a critical break that I didn’t even see before. When I need to *change* a product in my storefront, it’s a bit of a pain in the backside. Okay, a total pain in the backside. I’ve been a programmer for almost as long as I could type (that’s a long time!) so I know my way around the technical side of running an e-commerce web site. I designed and set up this entire site on my own, after all. Even so, making these THOUSANDS of changes is very daunting. The problem is that I can’t do it in a big batch. I have to do it individually.

One. At. A. Time.

OMG serious! That’s literally months of work on a 40-hour workweek. The printing house gave me a week. ONE FRIGGING WEEK!

Totally not possible.

So, instead of trying to accomplish a total miracle, I decided to make a big change. A big, productive change. But the change requires a ton of work. I’m switching to a different printing house. So, my products from my previous printer will be disappearing from the site and replaced with equally awesome products from the new printer. I’m not sure you will even be able to notice a huge change from one printing house to the other from your end, as a customer, after I get the migration finished. Well, other than the fact that you will see a lot of new items available because the new printing house stocks a huge assortment of merchandise, whereas the previous one was pretty limited in their scope of products.

So, to summarize: some people have some crappy business practices and I am working hard to protect you (and me) from unscrupulous businesses by making sure I’m using a well-established printing house with a huge variety of merchandise available and an awesome reputation for top-notch printing and materials! Even though it is taking a long time to make the change, you will see a brand new design line available once it is complete! Yay! I already have the design finished and ready. I just need to finish the work behind the scenes to bring it to you. Stay tuned for the next update: I’ll let you know once it’s all done with a brand new announcement and perhaps a new sale to celebrate!

Neural Training Through Audio-Stimulation?

What? Is this possible?

It’s kind of fringe, sure. But in a nutshell: yes. It’s possible! Now you want to know how this all works, right? Well, the answer is kind of simple and kind of complex. I’ll go simple for now.

Perhaps you’ve heard those people who say that everything in the universe has it’s own unique “vibration”? After being laughed at for decades now, science has actually proven these “crackpots” to be right! Bear with me… Light and sound travel in waves. Well, light is both a particle and a wave but.. yeah, it still has wave properties. Since light and sound travel in waves, our perception of the universe is based on the waveform. Without those waveforms of light and sound, we would essentially be blind and deaf to the world around us. Using that fact as a basis for studies, scientists have determined that not only does our perception of objects rely on visual and auditory waveforms, but the objects each have their own unique vibrational pattern that transforms into additional “background noise” waveforms. The source of these vibrational patterns was as elementary as it can get, yet shocking at the same time: atomic and molecular movement!

EVERYTHING is made of atoms and molecules, from the smallest dust particle to the largest star! But, what does this have with neural training? Just bear with me. I’m getting there.

Not only does everything have its own unique vibrational pattern, but our BRAINS also generate vibrational patterns! The vibrational patterns generated from within our brains are believed to be the product of electrical stimulation, discharge, and currents flowing in our brains and our bodies. Using FMRI scans, we have been able to locate exact spots in our brains that are triggered during different activities and emotional experiences. We have also been able to determine the vibrational frequency that is produced by those places in our brains during that activity or experience.

When I talk about “vibrational frequency”, think about actually hearing a vibration. Have you ever heard a Tibetian Singing Bowl? How about someone making a wine glass “sing” by running their fingertip along the lip of the glass? If you have heard those things, you have heard a vibrational frequency! A vibrational frequency is simply the audio tone that is produced by any given vibration.

But, most of the sounds that would be produced by our brain’s electrical signals are in the infrasound range. It’s pretty much inaudible to human ears, though some other animals are known to respond to infrasound. Elephants can produce and hear infrasound so effectively that we believe they use it to communicate over vast distances! Whales also produce and hear infrasound, which travels more effectively through water, and can use it to communicate across hundreds of miles! Animals are known to flee sites long before they are struck by earthquakes and tsunamis, we believe the animals hear the infrasound waves of the event which are released long before the actual vibrations are felt on the ground or the waves actually reach the shore. This usually allows them time to escape the catastrophe. But, just because we can’t actually hear it as an audible sound doesn’t mean that we don’t hear it! Our brains respond, even if our ears don’t tell us that there is a sound there!

I’m not going to take all day restating science but there’s plenty of people who ALSO recognize an earthquake is coming before it is felt shaking. Their warning usually appears as a queasy feeling and a rather unique type of headache, but it is usually only within seconds to minutes before the earthquake. Animals respond faster because they actually register the sound as being heard by their ears, but humans have much less of a response time because it takes the human body longer to develop enough of an annoyance with the infrasound tone to generate a physical response. Basically, our ears don’t register the sound as heard, but it still creates a reaction within the brain.

This all comes down to the point: neural training. And using tones that we don’t actually hear with our ears! We do have somewhat of a list of the frequencies produced within our brains when we feel certain things or when we do different activities. Sleeping generates a different tone than play. Focusing our thoughts on a certain task generates a different tone than when we do things “on autopilot”. Dreaming sleep (REM) generates tones unique from a deep, dreamless sleep. Active learning and passive learning also have their own, unique tones.

I have been experimenting. I use Adobe Audition on a regular basis anyway, so I already had a good software suite to experiment with. And Adobe Auditon has a utility where you can add tracks with specific hertz frequencies. Perfect! I downloaded some ambient audio sounds, songs, and compilations. I edited them to include very specific tone frequencies unique to what I wanted to use the audio track for.

My “sleep music” has the sound of a stream bubbling by, a campfire, light drumming in the distance and some ethereal tonal music mixed in. To this, I added specific hertz frequencies to stimulate healing, promote deep and restful sleep and alleviate anxiety.

My “study music” has ambient music backed by hertz frequencies for focusing on a task, passive and active learning and anxiety relief.

So far, results have been AMAZING! Not only for me, but my entire family has also noticed changes! We ALL sleep much better, feel better when we wake up and feel more refreshed. We use the “study music” when my son is doing his homeschool lessons and the difference is like night and day! Not only has it helped him stay focused and “in learning mode” during lessons, but more open and calm throughout the entire day as well!

I highly recommend neural training to anyone and everyone! Even if you aren’t having specific issues, there are passive tones that just help you to feel more relaxed, calm and more productive. And, trust me, it works! It sounds weird and strange, but then again… I’m kinda weird and strange so it makes perfect sense that I’d try it out. Even so, I would only recommend the technique to anyone else if it actually worked! So, go give it a try! What are you waiting for? Your brain will thank you 🙂

Completely Reworked Site!

It’s been a long time, but I’m finally done… I think!

I have been totally reworking this web site to more accurately reflect my intent in a professional manner. I finally got myself collected and focused! I set myself up with a print-on-demand print company that I now utilize to apply my designs to various products and send directly to my customers. I really like this company so far, they even offer brand-name, high-quality products to adorn with my designs!

Some of the updates to the site include:

  • Completely new design & layout
  • Easier navigation
  • Merchandise added!
  • Merchandise separated into different sections for easier searching
  • Added three different online payment methods, fully secured with SSL: debit card, credit card & PayPal
  • Streamlined the checkout process
  • Added FAQ sections
  • Added a full-featured help desk and support ticket system to the site!
  • Added support chat that connects directly to ME, so the only times I’m not able to respond are when I’m sleeping or at the doctor’s office!
  • Added support for push-notifications to help you stay up to date on all the new stuff!
  • Added not one but THREE newsletters that you can subscribe to: General Updates, Merchandise Updates, and Essential Oils!
  • Streamlined back end to reduce your time spent loading pages and images
  • Streamlined the order process so you get your merch faster!

Granted, I have a lot of things demanding my time lately: homeschooling my son, staying on top of all of the housework and meal prep with EDS (it’s a lot harder than you might think!) and trying to be a “present” wife and mother. SO, the updates have taken about a month of work in my free time. Free time… what an interesting concept. What exactly IS that, again? But anyway, I digress… it’s taken about a month of work, ZERO free time, and a lot of hand cramps and backaches from hovering over my computer and laptop for hours on end every day but it’s done and it was SO WORTH IT!!!

I’ve so missed doing my digital artwork and it feels so good to be back at it! All this work has been to give me a creative outlet for my digital artwork that I could also use to help support my extra bills from my doctors and to pay for medical equipment. Sure, we have great insurance through my husband’s work but it only pays so much and doesn’t pay a penny for medical equipment unless it is provided from a medical facility (like a hospital) after a procedure. So if I had back surgery and the surgical team gave me a back brace for recovery, it would be covered. When I need a back brace because I have a degenerative illness and can’t walk without being braced, I’m S-O-L. So, here is my delightfully fun and creative way to work on that issue 🙂

I hope you really enjoy the new site. Don’t forget to subscribe to the newsletters and push notifications and check out all the new designs in the Merch section! I’d love to hear your feedback, so post your comments below! Suggest changes to the site if you want, suggest new design ideas, anything! And don’t forget to share with your friends 🙂

Let me start by announcing the grand opening of my clothing line! You can find it at https://www.facebook.com/KristensMerch/shop as well as on this site at https://www.kristensoils.com/apparel-drinkware/

Now here’s the story of how it came into being…

I have mentioned on this blog and in some vlog episodes that I have Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome. This syndrome has kinda taken over my world in the last few years. It’s progressive and degenerative to the connective tissues in my body, so I have joints that are literally falling apart. Walking is tough. I don’t run anymore. Ever.

I’ve been a stay-at-home-mom since I had my son 10 years ago.

My husband has a good job with the government, good insurance, the whole nine yards. But, even so, the remaining annual deductible and co-pays have been hurting our budget lately. Couple that with the fact that I now need “durable medical equipment” (walkers, wheelchairs, etc) and insurance don’t even touch helping in those costs, and we’re in debt up to our eyeballs from medical bills. I tried getting disability since I honestly can’t hold down a regular job anymore due to my illness. I discovered that I am 100% ineligible for disability because I haven’t gained at least 5 social security work credits in the last 10 years. Never mind the fact that I have been taking care of my kid full time during those 10 years. AND he actually needed full-time care due to HIS medical needs. But even so, “rules are rules, I’m sorry,” is all I heard.

So, one social security work credit is equal to having paid taxes on $1300 of income in a year. I can earn up to 4 per year. So, I need to make taxable income of at least $5200 per year for two years. Either that or I can apply and get denied, then challenge that denial enough times that I get an actual court hearing in front of a judge to determine if I should or shouldn’t get help with my medical stuff. “As a general rule,” I was advised by a social security attorney, “that process will take 5 to 8 years.” But if I could get taxable income, I could qualify without the whole appeals process within 2 years. Yes, I do think that is all by design. I was also told I could try to qualify for SSI, but my husband makes too much for me to qualify. There are waivers available per county on basis of need. but my county has an annual allotment of 300 waivers and a waiting list of 6,000 people.

I’m severely restricted by life and illness, but I am one hell of a creative person. Surely there is something I can do to make taxable income for two years…

I had used Cafepress for years and years. When I signed up with them and started creating designs, they gave me 30% commissions on all sales of my designs. Not great, but not bad either. It wasn’t a serious business for me. Instead, it was mostly an outlet for some creativity, and I enjoyed making designs that I could later order for myself or my friends.

In recent years, they have gone from 30% to somewhere closer to 10%. What does that mean for part-time hobby clothing designers like myself? My commission payouts went from $30 every month or so to $30 once or twice a year. My sales were up, they were literally selling thousands of dollars of merchandise with my designs, but I was getting diddly.

So, finally, I decided I was fed up with that bullcrap. I need the income and I can really do better than 10% commission.

I’ve been a web developer for longer than I had ever designed clothing. I like to think I’m at least decent at it. I have a web site with a very reliable CRM (content management software – I use wordpress for my site). I have a presence on both facebook and instagram. I have the entire Adobe creative suite at my disposal. Surely I could do this…. right?

So I started. I came up with some brand new designs since I can’t re-use the ones I had previously used on CafePress. (Interesting note: CafePress owns your designs once you upload them to the cafepress system and you can’t use them again on your own for anything else legally). Considering I’m a full-time stay-at-home-mom, full-time homeschooling instructor AND full-time housewife, I didn’t have a lot of time to devote to this project on a day-to-day basis. Yes. Most folks don’t think it is too hard to be a stay at home parent but lemme tell ya… it gets exceptionally hard when you have Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome and can hardly walk most of the time! Tasks that used to take 10 minutes can now take all day if I can even do them at all! So, needless to say, not a heck of a lot of time for other things. Like life, creativity, ya know… crazy.

I got started on the technical side of things. I had to design a shop and I knew I wanted a social media presence to make my marketing much easier but I couldn’t devote any money yet. Nothing. I looked at Shopify, which would be awesome but it has a monthly fee. IF I could make enough to guarantee enough money to cover taxes and Shopify fees then that would be fine but there’s no promise of having enough sales to start. Once I got started and off the ground, I could totally do Shopify but until then, I have to find something else. I set up a shop section on the site using WooCommerce (an e-commerce add-on for WordPress) and found a print-on-demand company that I liked. No commissions, just a printing company. So I can make a design, upload it to my printing company who supplies me with the product information and photos with my design added for my shop, list the item on the shop on this site and then update to add it in the facebook shop catalog. It’s a lot of steps but I have the technical know-how to do it all myself and thus I don’t need to pay someone else to do it for me.

So now I can make my own designs, list them and when a sale does happen, I don’t get a measly 10% commission. I handle the sale myself. The order is automatically sent to my printer, along with my wholesale cost payment and shipping fee. The design is printed on the desired product and shipped directly to the customer by the printing company, which saves on turnaround time. Anything else beyond the wholesale cost, shipping cost, and sales tax is taxable income to count towards my eventual ability to qualify for social security disability to help me with my medical needs. It took a long time to set it all up. A lot longer than it would have taken me 20 years ago. About a month longer. But it’s done and live! I’m trying to add at least one new design per week and I’m open to creating custom designs for people who want them, just drop me a line using the chat at the bottom of every page on this site! Here’s a taste of some of the things I have designed so far…

POM: Summer Savory

Throughout ancient Egypt, the dried summer savory herb was powdered and used in various ways. Today, it is common to find this peppery and piney herb in cuisines worldwide. The inventive uses of summer savory throughout the world make it a diverse and powerful plant. Chemically similar to Oregano, Summer Savory essential oil has a warm, herbaceous aroma, making it the perfect addition to herbal and tonic blends. This essential oil is high in antioxidants and carvacrol content, which make it extremely beneficial when used internally. Due to its high phenol content, caution should be taken when inhaling or diffusing Summer Savory. When applied to the skin, Summer Savory should be diluted at a 1:10 ratio with a carrier oil.
